Prep roundup: Arroyo Grande sweeps Pioneer Valley in swimming

The Arroyo Grande High boys and girls swimming teams swept Pioneer Valley on Friday, winning 208-61 on the boys side and 241-54 on the girls. Sarah Stipanov

Freshman Sarah Stipanov was second in the 200 free 2 minutes, 16.39 seconds, and Madison Barneich was third (2:19.02), each with personal bests.

Hannah Parson won the 200 individual medley in a personal best of 2:20.82, and Sam Hazel won the 50 free in 26.72, out-touching teammate Emily Berg (26.96), both with personal best.

Parson had a CIF-consideration time in the 100 fly (1:02.60) and Emily Sonny won the 100 free in a personal best 58.61, beating out teammate Sam Vitt (1:00.54).

Hazel won the 100 backstroke in a CIF-consideration 1:05.10, and Berg was second (1:05.87).

Sarah Kasper was first in the 100 breast in 1:17.83 and Abigail Schachter had a personal-best time of 1:20.94, as did Taylor York (1:23.48).

On the boys side, Trent Schachter won the 50 free in 22.32 and the 100 breast in 1:02.67, both CIF-consideration times.

Chris Dichmann also won two events, winning the 200 free in 1:49.99 (a CIF-consideration time) and the 100 fly in 58.85.

Kevin Virnig added wins in the 200 IM (2:07.35) and the 100 back (58.98).

The 200 free relay had two teams that went under the CIF-consideration mark. The team of Schachter, Nathan Solis, Charlie Watkins, and Dichmann out-touched Jack Alexander, Jared Martin, James Hazel, and Josh Smith, 1:33.39 to 1:33.45.

Trevor Quezada won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 152.20.

Nipomo 129, Templeton 28 (boys) Templeton 94, Nipomo 67 (girls)

The Titans split a meet with Templeton on Friday.

Templeton’s Amanda Wilson won the 50 free in a CIF-qualifying time of 25.91 seconds and also won the 100 butterfly in a CIF-consideration time of 59.92. Also with CIF-consideration times were Jordan Hazell, who won the 500 freestyle in 5:46.6, and Sheridan Lee, who also won the 100 backstroke in 1:12.2.

The 200 free relay of Jessica Shapiro, Chrissy Coles, Lee and Wilson won in a CIF-consideration time of 1:54.36.

For Nipomo, the boys winners included Wyatt Marsalek, who won the 200-yard freestyle in a CIF-consideration time of 1:54.59, and Austin Simpson, who won the 200 individual medley in 2:04.25 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.80, both CIF-consideration times.

The 200 free relay team of Simpson, Matt Dalberg, Nolan Santala and Marsalek also posted a CIF-consideration time, winning in 1:39.12.

Marsalek also won the 100 fly in 1:00.85.

Joe Gocke won twice, in the 500 free (5:29.33) and 100 back (1:03.00).

The 200 medley relay team of Simpson, Dalberg, Garrit VanderVeen and Blake Hudson won in 1:52.02, and the 400 free relay team of VanderVeen, Hudson, Brad Brehen and Jason Brehen won 3:47.99.

VanderVeen won the 50 free in 24.82, and Santala won the 100 free in 55.72.

On the girls side, Alayna Gocke won the 200 free in 1:58.13, a CIF-qualifying time. Sasha Llova won the 100 breast in 1:22.31.

The boys are 4-0, and the girls are 0-4 for the Titans.

Morro Bay 105, Santa Maria 65 (boys); Morro Bay 127, Santa Maria 43 (girls)

Myles Freeh won the 100 fly in 1:10.99, and Lucas Jakovich won the 200 individual medley in 2:23.16.

On the girls side, Torie White, Alissa Marvin, and Kendra Twist each won two individual events, and Luna Bailey won the 500 free in 6:59.86.

San Luis Obispo 213 Atascadero 93 (boys); San Luis Obispo 237, Atascadero 65 (girls)

Sean Mylan won the 100 free in 50.08, beating out San Luis Obispo’s Zander Rolph, and also won the 50 free in 22.39, out-touching San Luis Obispo’s Galen Penvenne (22.43).

Penvenne won the 100 fly in 56.76.

Mark Erbstoesser won two events for the Tigers — the 200 free (2:00.63) and the 100 back (59.06).

Blake Griffith won the diving competition for San Luis Obispo with a mark of 269.25.

On the girl’s side, Sofia Terry won the 100 back in 1:04.74, and Gabby Wood won the 100 breast in 1:15.32 for the Tigers. Adelynn Petersen added wins in the 500 free (5:28.25) and the 100 fly (1:02.02).

Jade Westphal won the girls diving competition with a score of 201.75 for the Tigers.

The San Luis Obispo boys are now 2-3 and 2-2 in the PAC 8.

SOFTBALL

Nipomo 6, Morro Bay 2

Hope Goodall pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs, four hits and striking out out six.

Morro Bay had a solo home run in the first inning, but the Titans responded with a run in the third and the fourth, followed by two runs in the fifth and the sixth.

Kate Russell was 3 for 4 with three RBI, and Kamaile Neel was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Goodall helped her cause at the plate, with an RBI and two runs scored on 2-for-3 hitting.

Nipomo (8-7) evens its LPL record at 2-2 and plays Santa Ynez on Tuesday.

Templeton 16, Santa Ynez 2

Templeton was led by Brooke Ferrari, who was 2 for 2 with a home run. Ashley Daugherty gave up three hits in five innings on the mound, and struck out 11.

Katie Murphee added another home run, Kaitlin Doty had two doubles and an RBI and Kathleen Cline was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Sydney Barlogio was also two for 4 with an RBI.

BASEBALL

Morro Bay 2, Nipomo 1

The Pirates’ Orion Witmer had a complete game, allowing no earned runs and striking out seven.

Westin Mace was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run, and Connor Masters scored on a Kal Hillaird single in the third.

Morro Bay (7-9, 5-5 LPL) play Lompoc three times next week.

San Luis Obispo 5, Paso Robles 2 (Thursday)

Jeremy Jess allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win, striking out five, walking two and allowing seven hits.

In a game that saw five lead changes, the Tigers took the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Matthew Mundorf to score Ben LeMiere.

Mundorf reached base three times, scoring two runs.

Nolan Binkele earned the decision, going 4 1/3 innings, walking two, striking out two and allowing three runs.

The Tigers went up 1-0 in the first on an RBI double by Tru Wells to score Jess, but the Bearcats answered in the bottom of the inning on a Mark Armstrong RBI double.

Armstrong also singled in the third inning for another RBI.

TRACK AND FIELD

Arroyo Grande at Aracadia Invitational

Malia Simon finished fifth in the girls rated 3,200 meters in a time of 10 minutes, 51.73 seconds, shaving 14 seconds off her personal best and finishing 3 seconds shy of a school record, head coach James Brown said.

In the boys open 3,200, Christian Ricketts finished 12th, posting the third best time in Arroyo Grande history at 9:25.03.
