Prep roundup: San Luis Obispo boys volleyball team sweeps Mission Prep

The San Luis Obispo High boys volleyball team held on to second place in the PAC 8 with a 3-0 win Thursday over Mission Prep.

San Luis Obispo’s (13-6, 4-1 PAC 8) offense was led by Nick Attala with eight kills. Three Tigers — Sawyer McSorley, John Duffy and Alex Chai — had five kills each.

“We really spread the ball around tonight,” San Luis Obispo coach Braidy Halverson said.

Senior Bowen Schoerer was in charge of distribution from the setter spot and finished the game with 32 assists.

San Luis Obispo will now turn its attention to one of the biggest matches of the season — a Tuesday home match against league leader Arroyo Grande. The outcome will go a long way in determining the PAC 8 champion.

Arroyo Grande defeated San Luis Obispo 3-0 the last time the teams met in the second week of the season.

“I think we are a much different team now,” Halverson said. “I don’t think we were prepared before.”

The teams are scheduled to play at 5:30 on Tuesday at San Luis Obispo.

Arroyo Grande 3, St. Joseph 0

Arroyo Grande swept 25-9, 25-12, 25-11, led by Ryan Meffert’s 13 kills and two aces.

Evan Lalanne had 12 kills and two blocks and Andy VanBogelen chipped in 5 kills and three blocks.

Sasha Bylsma distributed 25 assists for the Eagles (9-0, 6-0 PAC 8).

Santa Ynez 3, Morro Bay 2

The Pirates were handed their first loss of the year, 25-17, 25-15, 20-25, 17-25, 15-13.

Spencer Cecil had 15 kills and five blocks and Dustin Limon added 13 kills, five blocks and 15 digs. Theo Mackey recorded 40 assists for Morro Bay (10-1, 5-1 LPL).

PREP BOYS TENNIS

Atascadero 15, Pioneer Valley 3

Brendan Adams swept at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 for the Greyhounds.

Adams has not lost a PAC 8 match this season.

Dean Menigoz swept at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 for Atacadero (7-6, 3-4 PAC 8), while the doubles team of Christian Wisberg and Luke Reilly won 6-0, 6-0, 6-2.

Lompoc 13, Nipomo 5

Jon Johnson swept at No. 1 singles 6-4,6-4, 6-2 for the Titans.

Emilio Moreno and Jordan Smith won a doubles match 6-4, and Ernie Atilano and Kenny Johnson also won a double match 6-4.

Arroyo Grande 10, St. Joseph 3

Freshman Dylan Black was pressed into varsity action in Arroyo Grande’s 10-3 win over St. Joseph that was stopped due to rain.

Black paired with Patrick Angle and swept 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, and Andrew Arcangel won 6-1, 6-0 for the Eagles (13-2, 70 PAC 8), who play at Mission Prep on Tuesday.

San Luis Obispo 15, Mission Prep 3

Zach Hilty won 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 for San Luis Obispo, and two out of three doubles teams swept.

Alex Hasley and Cole Westwood swept 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, and Kavi Freyaldenhoven and Sam Johnson didn’t drop a game 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

The Tigers are 11-3 and 6-1 in the PAC 8 on the year.

Templeton 14, Orcutt Academy 4

Jackson Hayes and Dillon Amadio swept 6-4, 6-0 , 6-0 for Templeton.

Chris Murray won a pair of sets 6-4, 6-0, and Nick Yonker and Max Starkman won 6-1, 6-1, 4-6.

Templeton is now 5-5 and 4-3 in the Los Padres League.

BOYS GOLF

San Luis Obispo 416, St. Joseph No Score

St. Joseph had only three players and didn’t recieve a score, but had the medalist, Ethan Ashbrook, who shot an even-par 72 at the Santa Maria Golf Course.

Andy Eppright led San Luis Obispo (10-1, 7-1 PAC 8) with a 75, and Coleman Godfrey carded an 82.

Righetti 397, Atascadero 440

Keith Moles shot a one-under 71 to medal for Righetti at the Rancho Maria Golf Course.

Cameron Leong and Matt Larson each shot an 86 for Atascadero.

Arroyo Grande 400, Mission Prep 522

Jack Avrit shot an even-71 to medal for the Eagles, and Gabe Zufall added a 77 and Owen Avrit carded an 80.

Sydney Haughian had the low score for Mission Prep (3-6, 2-6 PAC 8), carding a 92.

SOFTBALL

San Luis Obispo 4, Pioneer Valley 3

The Tigers led 4-1 entering the seventh and survived two unearned runs to pull out the win on the road.

Sami Good and Hanna Gibb combined on the mound for six hits, one earned run and four strikeouts.

San Luis Obispo (6-9, 2-2 PAC 8) scored two runs on passed balls in the fifth, and Anika Meyers added an RBI triple. Marissa Piatt had a pair of singles and and RBI.

The Tigers take on Atascadero on Tuesday.

Arroyo Grande 7, Paso Robles 1

Bailey Killough had a home run, a double, two RBI and a run to lead the Eagles, and Logan Nunes was 3 for 4 with two RBI.

Killough has eight home runs on the year according to coach John Welch and almost had a ninth, but was robbed by a leaning catch over the fence.

Leadoff hitter Sam Oliver was 2 for 4 and had two RBI, and Kacie Berger was 2 for 3 with a double. Arroyo Grande had 14 hits on the day.

Julie Lewis picked up the win for the Eagles (2-1 PAC 8), striking out four in a complete game.

Paso Robles was led by Madeline Lovelace, who was 2 for 3 with a run, and Jasmine Smiley had a double and an RBI.

Coast Union 7, Valley Christian 1

Every player had a least one hit for the Broncos in their league opener.

Maddie May was 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBI, and Kiana Valenzuela was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Elie Magnusson pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and was 2 for 3 at plate with three RBI.

Coast Union is now 5-5 and play Riverdale on Friday.

BASEBALL

Atascadero 6, Mission Prep 3

Zach Garcia pitched six innings, allowing three earned run and two walks while striking out eight, and Nathan Meredith struck out the side for the save in the seventh.

Tysen Delkener was 2 for 2 with a stolen base, and Nathan Mitchell had a two-run double for the Greyhounds.

Spencer Erdman was 2 for 4, and Lucas Sprouse added a double for Atascadero (9-5, 3-3 PAC 8).

Hunter Losee hit his first home run of the season for the Royals — a two run shot — and Sage Pera was 1 for 3 with a double and a run.

Renn Duncan was 1 for 3 with a single and an RBI for Mission Prep (7-8, 2-4 PAC 8), which plays Arroyo Grande on Tuesday.

Atascadero will host St. Joseph on Tuesday.

Arroyo Grande 6, Righetti 4

Joey De La Rosa was 3 for 4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI to lead the Eagles, who never trailed.

Nash Ackerman was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and Jake Shusterich allowed three earned runs, 13 hits, one walk and struck out one in a complete game.

Arroyo Grande improved to 10-4 and 4-2 in PAC 8 play.

TRACK AND FIELD

Paso Robles 79; Atascadero 48 (boys); Paso Robles 94, Atascadero 37 (girls) (Wednesday)

Michelle McPherson won the 100- and the 200-meter races and was on the winning 4x100 relay team for the Bearcats.

Madison Mitchell won the 100 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and was also on the winning 4x400 relay.

Ashley Davis won the 800 and was on the 4x400 relay, and Codie Wilshusen won both the high jump and the pole vault.

Kiah Williams won the long jump and Jacob Franklin won the discus and the shot put. Ty Jones won the 100, Steven Schouten won the 200 and Javier Jimenez won the 400.

Williams, Jones, Schouten and Jimenez combined to win the 4x100 relay.

Izaiah Sheeter won the high jump and long jump for Atascadero, and Matthew Lyons added wins in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

San Luis Obispo 88, Arroyo Grande 47 (boys unofficial); San Luis Obispo 72, Arroyo Grande 64 (girls unofficial) (Wednesday).

Callum Bolger won both the 800 and the 1,600, and Matt White won the 3,200 for the Tigers.

Delvon Jack won the 110 hurdles, James Higgins won the pole vault and Javon Montegomery won the long jump. Nate Higgins was first in the 400 and both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams were victorious.

On the girls side, Hope Morgan won the 3,200, and Kate Miller won the 800.
