San Luis Obispo High is “lights out” early, holds on to beat Paso Robles in softball
The San Luis Obispo High softball team survived a late Paso Robles rally, after holding a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning, to beat the Bearcats 4-3.
Sami Good pitched a complete game for San Luis Obispo (4-5-1), allowing nine hits, three earned runs and striking out three.
“You talk about the four phases of the game — hitting, fielding, baserunning, and pitching. We were lights out the first six innings,” coach Dan Monroe said.
Anika Meyer was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, a run and a stolen base, and Lorin Tapp had two singles, an RBI and a run for the Tigers.
Chloe Kerns was 2 for 2 with a double and a run, and Crystal Linn was 2 for 4 with a run, and Mikayla Stone and Becca Twyman each had two hits and an RBI for Paso Robles (3-6, 0-1 PAC 8).
Atascadero 17, St. Joseph 3
The Greyhounds romped to a PAC 8 road victory.
Sally Bowles threw a complete game, striking out seven while allowing one earned run. She did not issue a walk. Bowles was also 4 for 4 with three RBI for Atascadero (6-3, 2-0 PAC 8).
Megan McClain was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBI, Ally Reagan was 2 for 4 with a homer and an RBI, Macie Pires was 2 for 4 with three RBI and Taylor Herzig was 2 for 2 with two RBI.
BASEBALL
Righetti 11, Mission Prep 2
The Royals lost the rubber match of their three-game PAC 8 series at home.
Andrew Souza was 1 for 3 with a solo home run. Hunter Losee 1 for 3, and Sam Oeser was 1 for 2 with a run for Mission Prep (4-4, 1-2 PAC 8).
BOYS TENNIS
Arroyo Grande 16, Pioneer Valley 2
Daniel Ha won two sets as an alternate, 6-3, 6-1, and Gregg Hayden won both the sets he played in 6-0, 6-0.
Austin Bricker and Joey Kullman combined to win 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and the Eagles (11-2, 5-0 PAC 8) took all nine doubles sets.
San Luis Obispo 10, Atascadero 8
James Raj and Kannan Freyaldenhoven swept 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 for the Tigers, and Zach Hilty dropped a set 4-6, before winning 6-0, 6-0.
San Luis Obispo (8-3, 4-1 PAC 8) returns to action April 5 against St. Joseph.
Brendan Adams swept 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 and Dean Menigoz won two out of three sets 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, for the Greyhounds.
Atascadero’s Christian Wisberg won a set 6-0 after dropping his first two, and the doubles team of Luke Reilly and Yuma Olsen won 2 of the 3 sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Greyhounds are 3-3 in the PAC 8 and 5-4 overall.
Morro Bay 14, Coast Union 4
Jonathan Tyra and Seth Wilkie swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, and the tandem of Gianni Bocardo and Shane Sheehy won 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 for the Pirates.
Harry Lyu and Joe Morris took two out of three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), and all the singles players for Morro Bay took two out of three sets.
Ethan Siems won 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, Ryan Morris won 1-6, 6-3, 6-0, and Simon Janzen won 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 for Morro Bay (6-4, 2-3 Los Padres League).
BOYS GOLF
Paso Robles 408, Mission Prep 473
Bailey Flickinger shot a 3-over 71 to medal for the Bearcats at the Dairy Creek Golf Course.
Zack Smith added a 75 for Paso Robles (3-3, 3-3 PAC 8).
Mission Prep (2-5, 1-5 PAC 8) was led by Robert Ball, who carded an 87.
San Luis Obispo 396, Pioneer Valley N/A
San Luis Obispo’s Cole Godfrey shot an even-par 72 at the Blacklake Golf Course to medal, and Andy Eppright shot a 74.
Pioneer Valley fielded four players and had to forfeit, but the match was played anyway.
Tigers are a perfect 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in the PAC 8.
Arroy Grande 407, Righetti 412
Arroyo Grande’s Jack Avrit and Righetti’s Keith Moles each shot a 76 to co-medal at the Rancho Maria Golf Course.
Owen Avrit followed with a 77, and Raleigh Deering shot an 83 for the Eagles.
SWIMMING
San Luis Obispo 211, Pioneer Valley 44 (boys)
Galen Pennvenne won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, and Joe Guidetti won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle for the Tigers.
Mark Erbstoesser won the 100 backstroke in a CIF-qualifying time of 57.76.
The Tigers will host a diving competition Saturday before a matchup against Atascadero next week.
TRACK AND FIELD
Morro Bay at quad meet in Santa Ynez
The Pirates girls team lost to Santa Ynez (93-43), Nipomo (88-48) and Cabrillo (89-47, while the boys team lost to Santa Ynez (121-11), Nipomo (111-6) and Cabrillo (131-4).
Hannah Buechner won the girls 800-meter race in 2:31, Roanne Nolan won the pole vault (10-3), Hannah Wiese won the 200 (28.02) and Audrey McClish won the 3,200 (11:55) for Morro Bay.
