Prep roundup: Catcher turned pitcher leads Morro Bay baseball to win
Morro Bay baseball coach Nick Burger stumbled upon a nice surprise Monday night.
After losing four games in a row, Burger decided to start Kalvin Hilliard, who usually plays catcher, on the mound.
“I was just thinking ‘Hey, let’s try something that the team will be excited about,’ ” Burger said.
Hilliard delivered with a complete game, six-strikeout performance to lift Morro Bay (4-4, 3-2 Los Padres) to an 8-1 win over Orcutt Academy.
“Looks like we just picked up a sixth pitcher,” Burger said of Hilliard, who is also batting over .400 on the season.
Tyler Chivens provided the offense for Morro Bay on Monday with a 2-for-3, three-RBI performance.
Morro Bay plays a pair of games against rival Templeton this week, with the first coming Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Morro Bay. The Pirates play Templeton on the road again Friday at 4 p.m.
