San Luis Obispo girls soccer continues historic playoff run with 3-1 win over Helix

One more win.

That’s the only thing standing in the way of the San Luis Obispo girls soccer team’s quest to claim the first regional soccer championship in county history after a 3-1 win over Helix on Thursday night in San Luis Obispo.

Freshman Amelia Corpuz-Carr scored again for No. 3 seeded San Luis Obispo (27-1-1) against No. 7 seeded Helix (15-4-6) to earn the Tigers a spot in the CIF-Southern Regional Division 3 finals on Saturday. It is Corpuz-Carr’s fifth goal of the postseason.

It was supposed to be a battle of defensive teams. Coming into the match, San Luis Obispo had given up just four goals in its past 14 games, and Helix of La Mesa had allowed two goals during its four-game winning streak. But the San Luis Obispo offensive pressure overwhelmed Helix while the Tigers defense, led by defenders Rylie Johnson and Grace Wearda, kept the Highlanders’ attack at bay. The only goal allowed by the Tigers was a misplayed ball by San Luis Obispo keeper Eislee Sohner who had two saves on the night.

The first goal of the game for San Luis Obispo came on an own goal by Helix. The back-breaker goal to make it 3-1 came on a majestic cross from junior Grace Park that found the head of freshman Olivia Ortiz who put it in the back of the net with 20 minutes to play in the second half.

San Luis Obispo’s win over the CIF-San Diego Section Division 3 champions sets up a state section finals appearance, the first ever for a San Luis Obispo County team, against South Hills (West Covina) Saturday at 1 p.m.
