Prep sports roundup: Arroyo Grande boys tennis beats San Marcos

The Arroyo Grande High boys tennis team beat Division 1 San Marcos 10-8 at home Wednesday.

The Division 2 Eagles took seven of nine possible doubles sets, led by the team of Patrick Angle and Parker Turner, who swept 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 and clinched the match with the 10th point.

The tandem of Austin Bricker and Joey Kullman went two for three, winning 6-4, 6-1, 1-6 and the team of Joseph Goryance and Tyler Tencati won a pair sets 6-2, 6-2, 4-6.

“In my 10 years of coaching, it was one of the best team efforts I’ve seen,” coach Lori Hollister said.

PAC 8 play begins Thursday for the Eagles (4-2) when they hosts Mission Prep.

SOFTBALL

San Luis Obispo 14, Morro Bay 0 (5 innings)

The Tigers scored nine runs in the second inning, highlighted by a Bee Soll 2-run triple and a Janae Caldera 3-run home run.

Marissa Piatt went 2 for 4 from the plate, and Sami Good struck out nine over four innings, allowing two hits.

San Luis Obispo (2-1) continues non-league action on Thursday against Templeton.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Morro Bay High boys volleyball team swept Santa Maria on Wednesday, winning 25-5, 25-16, 25-6.

Spencer Cecil led Morro Bay (4-0) with 19 kills and 8 blocks.

Dustin Limon added 17 kills and 4 blocks for the Pirates, while Theo Mackey contributed with 41 assists.

GOLF

The SLO High boys golf team defeated Atascadero on Wednesday, 393 to 465 at Chalk Mountain Golf Course.

Andy Eppright from SLO was the medalist, shooting a 73.

Casey Leebrick shot a 75, and Coleman Godfrey finished with a 78.

Austin McMillin shot a 90 for Atascadero.

The Tigers moved to 4-0 overall with the win.

TRACK

The San Luis Obispo High track team defeated Paso Robles in their first dual meet of the season.

The boys beat Paso Robles 74-58, and the girls won 71-65.

The boys were led by Andrew Toh, who won the 100 meters in 11.44 seconds and was on the winning 4x100 relay team with Dylan Archer in 44.76.

Archer also was on the winning 4x400 team (3:34.31), with Nate Higgins, who had a 50.65 in the individual 400 meters.

Callum Bolger won the 1600 meters in 4:17.25 (one of the leading times in the state, according to San Luis Obispo’s coach) and the 800 in 1:59.96.

For the girls, Shaina Morris won the long jump at 15 feet, 5 inches, and the was on the 4x400 team that won in 4:12.46.

Kate Miller won the 800 in 2:34.05, and Carolyn Adams won the 300 hurdles in 51.99.

Cece Devaney won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inche,s and Elizabeth Willey won the triple jump with a toal of 31 feet,10 inches.

Jacob Franklin won the shot and discus, and Cade England won the high jump and triple jump for Paso Robles.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Templeton girls swimming and diving team beat Morro Bay 98-78.

Amanda Wilson won the 200 freestyle in 2:00.58 to automatically qualify for CIF. Wilson also won the 100 butterfly in a 1:00.22, also a CIF automatic time.

Jordan Hazell won the 100 backstroke in 1:08.51, and Sheridan Lee was first in the 500 free in 6:18.31.

Freshman Jessica Shapero won the 50 free in 28.37.

Jordan Hazell, Gwen Hazell, Lee and Wilson all teamed up to win the 400 relay in 4:11.66 for the Eagles.

Dos Pueblos 160, San Luis Obispo 131 (boys)

The Tigers were led by Blake Griffith, who won the diving contest with a 249.85, and Galen Penvenne, who automatically qualified for both the 50 free (21.96) and the 100 backstroke (53.85).

Penvenne’s 100 backstroke time was good for third place on the school’s all time record list. Olympian Jeff Powers holds the record with a time of 53.16.

The team of Will Anderson, Julius Vogel, Kiran Heidler and Eric Lemieux won the 200 medley in 2:02.07, and Heidler went on to win the 200 IM in 2:28.33, and the 100 butterfly in 1:05.21.

Vogel won the 100 free in 56.44.

Zander Rolph, Mark Erbstroesser, Joe Guidetti and Pennvenne combined to win the 200 free relay in 1:34.89.
