The San Luis Obispo girls soccer team made history Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over Liberty (Madera) in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division 3 Soccer Championships.

With the win, San Luis Obispo (26-1-1) became the first team in San Luis Obispo County to win a regional playoff game since the CIF began holding regional soccer championships in 2008. Mission Prep was the last team earn a spot in the regional state playoffs, in 2009.

San Luis Obispo (No. 3 seed) dominated Liberty (No. 6 seed) the first half with three freshman goals — two by Amelia Corpuz-Carr and one by Amber Nunes.

In the second half, the Tigers’ defense locked down Liberty’s top scorer, Raina Wristen, and got a sprawling, one-handed save by senior goalkeeper Eislee Sohner.

Grace Park added the cherry on top with a goal in the final five minutes.

The San Luis Obispo win ended Liberty’s (20-5-2) 14-game winning streak.

The victory — along with Helix’s 1-0 win over Yorba Linda on Tuesday — means that San Luis Obispo will host Helix at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
