Nipomo High’s Alexis Garcia wins twice at state girls wrestling championships
Nipomo High’s Alexis Garcia won twice before being eliminated at the CIF-State Girls Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Visalia Convention Center.
Garcia, wrestling in the 235-pound division, had a first-round bye and then lost by fall at 0:53 to Essence Spencer of Jesse Bethel.
In the consolation bracket, Garcia defeated Mira Loma’s Miranda Guess 4-2 and Paloma Valley’s Jaleela Caulk 9-1 before losing by fall to Paramount’s Chazel Becerra.
The state appearance was the capper to a strong showing by Garcia this season.
It was the second loss this month to Becerra for Garcia, the CIF-Southern Section runner-up at 235. In the section final, Becerra beat her by fall at 3:21. Garcia won four matches to reach the final in the Feb. 12-13 meet at Roosevelt High School. Garcia was the 235-pound champ at the CIF-Southern Section Northern Regional earlier in February.
Garcia’s teammate, Mackenzie Wisneski, was the fourth alternate at 111 pounds for the Southern Section at the state meet, but did not wrestle.
