San Luis Obispo High scores late winner to advance to the girls soccer semifinals

The San Luis Obispo High girls soccer team got a golden goal from Grace Park as the second overtime wound down in a 2-1 win over San Marcos on Thursday in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinals in Santa Barbara.

Park took a pass from Gen Basich-Pease, turned inside the center defender and buried a shot from 18 yards out with 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, coach Leslie O’Connor said.

“We just pounded them for 20 minutes (in overtime),” O’Connor said. “We decided to just go after them, and we created chance after chance.”

Park scored the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes to go in the second half, off an assist from Olivia Ortiz. But the Tigers couldn’t hold on to the 1-0 lead, and gave up the equalizer with nine minutes to play.

Goalkeeper Eislee Sohner made “at least eight saves,” O’Connor said, including a key save late in the game.

San Luis Obispo remains undefeated (24-0-1) and takes on Yorba Linda (14-4-3), which beat West Torrance 4-3 on penalty kicks Thursday. The Tigers host the semifinal match at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
