Prep boys basketball: Mission Prep upsets St. Joseph 68-62
The Mission Prep boys basketball team upset St. Joseph 68-62 on Wednesday night, spoiling a 19-game win streak by the Knights. Kyle Stewart scored 20 points — 13 in the second half — and Carter Gran and Max Basile each chipped in 13 points.
Matt Blaney added nine points.
The last time the two teams met, it resulted in a 55-39 loss for the Royals, who managed only 20 points in the first half. Wednesday was a different story as Mission Prep scored 24 points in the first quarter and led 35-23 at the half.
“We focused on executing,” coach Terrance Harris said. “The guys came out a lot more focused. We knew we would have to fight.”
St. Joseph tied the game at 56 and the game became a “grind to the finish.”
“We played a team game today. We trusted each other.” Harris said.
The win moves the Royals (16-8, 10-1 PAC 8) into a tie with the Knights (21-3, 10-1) for first place in the PAC 8 standings.
Mission Prep plays Paso Robles on Friday.
Arroyo Grande 53, Paso Robles 35
Patrick Angle scored 20 points and hit four 3-pointers to lead the Eagles. Bradley Mickey added 10 points and Matt Wingerden had eight for Arroyo Grande, which pulled away during a 27-point barrage in the third quarter.
Paso Robles (4-18, 0-11) led 21-14 at the half. The Bearcats were led by Gabe Linn, who scored 10 points and Ty Jones, who had eight points.
San Luis Obispo 67, Pioneer Valley 50
Nick Attala led the Tigers with 19 and Alex Chai had 15 points. Augusto Supertino scored 12 points and Seth Moore added 11 points for San Luis Obispo (15-10, 6-5 PAC 8), who face Atascadero on Friday.
Atascadero 61, Righetti 43
The Atascadero boys basketball team defeated Righetti 61-43 on Wednesday, improving to 7-4 in PAC 8 play.
Marco Rojas led the Greyhounds with 17 points. Gabe Perry added 13 and Tyler Warren scored 11.
Atascadero (15-7, 7-4) hosts San Luis Obispo on Friday.
