Prep roundup: Herlihy leads Arroyo Grande to girls basketball win over San Luis Obispo
Ashlyn Herlihy scored 26 points — 10 in the third quarter — to lead the Arroyo Grande High girls basketball team over San Luis Obispo 51-37 on Friday night.
Stephanie Brenner had 15 points and Lorin Tapp added 10 for the Tigers.
San Luis Obispo (10-10, 3-6 PAC 8) was down five at the half and cut the Eagles’ lead to four in the third quarter, but Herlihy proved to be too much down the stretch, scoring another seven in the fourth quarter.
San Luis Obispo plays at Righetti on Monday.
Paso Robles 43, St. Joseph 37
Grace Rosa scored 20 points, and Kim Buchanan had 10 points and was 4-for-4 from the foul line for the Bearcats (4-5 PAC 8).
“The first half was less than par, we made a lot of silly mistakes,” coach Heidi Sill said. “The second half we came out ready to play.”
BOYS BASKETBALL
San Luis Obispo 54, Arroyo Grande 42
Nick Attala had 19 points, and Alex Chai added 16 points for the Tigers, who held the Eagles to 20 points over the final three quarters. San Luis Obispo outscored Arroyo Grande 41-20 over that period.
“We defended with some intensity,” San Luis Obispo Jeff Brandow said, whose team improves to 13-9 and 5-4 in the PAC 8. The Tigers play Righetti on Monday.
Mission Prep 68, Atascadero 53
Kyle Colvin scored 21 points in the Royals’ win.
Max Basile added 16 points and 13 rebounds, Kyle Stewart had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Matthew Blaney added 11 points for Mission Prep (14-8, 9-1 PAC 8).
Michael McClain had 19 points and Elijah Cooks added 11 points for Atascadero (13-8, 5-5 PAC 8).
St. Joseph 71, Paso Robles 32
Griffin Betancourt led the Bearcats (4-16, 0-9 PAC 8) with six points.
Buckley 48, Coast Union 18
Sam MacKinnon scored seven points to lead the Broncos in a nonleague loss.
Jez Lawson added six for Coast Union (10-9, 6-0 Coast Valley League).
GIRLS SOCCER
San Luis Obispo 1, Arroyo Grande 0
Genevieve Basich-Pease scored in the second half on a blast from 20 yards out as the San Luis Obispo High girls soccer team stayed undefeated with a 1-0 win over Arroyo Grande on Friday night.
Eisley Sohner had three saves in goal for the Tigers, who are 17-0-1 overall and 9-0-0 in PAC 8 play.
San Luis Obispo travels to Righetti on Monday.
Atascadero 2, Mission Prep 1
Hannah Flickenger opened the scoring for the Greyhounds 10 minutes into the game, and Serena Ramirez tacked on another in the second half on a pass from Lexi Setting.
Marina Garcia had two saves for Atascadero (11-3-2, 5-3-1 PAC 8), which moves into third place behind San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande.
The Greyhounds play Paso Robles on Monday.
BOYS SOCCER
Atascadero 3, Mission Prep 1
Alex Marca scored a pair of goals in the second and eighth minute to lead the Greyhounds.
Sergio Castillo assisted on Marca’s second goal, on a cross that found Marca in the middle of the box.
Scott Mello scored in the 41st minute after a deflected John Majors shot fell at Mello’s feet.
Mission Prep scored in the 42 minute.
Carson Setting had five saves for the Greyhounds (11-8, 3-6 PAC 8), who finished with 24 shots on goal.
Atascadero plays Paso Robles on Monday.
San Luis Obispo 2, Arroyo Grande 1
The Tigers came away with a win to remain in second place in a showdown of the second and third place teams in the PAC 8.
Senior Keith McCarty scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick for San Luis Obispo.
Trent Abbott got the Tigers on the board after a loose ball fell to his feet in the box.
Arroyo Grande answered with a penalty kick with two minutes left in the first half to tie the score at 1-1.
San Luis Obispo (12-3-2, 7-1-1 PAC 8) trail only Pioneer Valley, which leads the PAC 8 standings.
The Tigers host Righetti at home on Monday before taking on Pioneer Valley on Wednesday.
GIRLS WATERPOLO
Los Osos 13, Arroyo Grande 7
The Eagles fell in a non-league matchup that pitted the number one seed in Division 3 against the number four seed in Division 2.
Sarah Parson and Kate Empey each had a pair of goals, and Isabella Solis, Taylor Arden, and Sam Vitt added a goal apiece.
Emily Sonny had 13 saves in goal for Arroyo Grande (16-2), which faces St. Joseph on Monday.
