San Luis Obispo girls water polo downs Paso Robles in final minute on senior night

San Luis Obispo senior Campbell Warren scored the go-ahead goal with less than a minute remaining Tuesday against Paso Robles to give the Tiger girls water polo team a dramatic 8-7 win at Sinsheimer Pool.

Warren talked about her winning shot — a slingshot-style throw into the net — after the match.

“I was just like, ‘We are tied up. This is terrifying. This is our Paso game. It’s senior night. How cool would it be to take that shot?’ ” Warren said of her second goal of the game. “I knew as soon as we got that six-on-five that could be it, so I took it.”

In the senior night PAC 7 match up for San Luis Obispo (12-6, 3-2 PAC 7), all five seniors scored at least one goal; Addie Foster had three, Autumn Faccinto had one, and Mikayla Faccinto added two more.

Paso Robles (13-9, 2-3) star Makenna Pugh brought the Bearcats back after they fell into a 5-1 hole, and they held a 7-6 with 2:46 to play before Foster and Warren took the lead back for San Luis Obispo.

Pugh scored four goals in the game, pushing her season total to 48.

“They stepped it up big,” San Luis Obispo coach Steve Jomaoas said. “I love to play the seniors on senior night just because it is their last home game, so I didn’t do as many substations as I usually do because I really wanted that group to pull it off. I knew they could.”

Next Tuesday, Paso Robles will host Atascadero, and San Luis Obispo will play Pioneer Valley on the road.

Jomaoas said the win was big for his team heading into the playoffs and the seniors want to keep it going for as long as possible.

“That meant a whole lot as our last home game to finish it all together,” Warren said.
