Prep roundup: Templeton falls to Los Padres League-leading Cabrillo in girls basketball
The Los Padres League-leading Cabrillo played a complete game in a dominating win over Templeton, winning 75-35.
Cabrillo (9-4, 5-0 Los Padres) held Templeton (6-7, 2-3 Los Padres) to just eight points in the first half.
Savannah Spinharney scored 13 points for Templeton in the loss, and Julia Aurignac added 13 rebounds and nine points.
Next up, the Eagles host Orcutt Academy on Tuesday.
Morro Bay 46, Orcutt Academy 27
Willow Bailey scored 19 points and dished out five assist for Morro Bay in a win over Orcutt Academy.
“We got contributions across the board, but player of the game goes to junior Juliana Ruef,” Morro Bay coach Bill Vedrin said. “She was all over the court.”
Ruef had seven points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Skye Schwellenbach added nine points.
Morro Bay (5-7, 2-4 Los Padres) hosts Santa Ynez on Tuesday.
Nipomo 48, Santa Maria 38
Vanessa Davis scored a team-high 14 points in a league win for Nipomo, which improves to 5-1 in the Los Padres League and 9-9 overall.
The Titans travel to face Lompoc on Tuesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Nipomo 64, Santa Maria 63
Nipomo survived a barrage of 3s against Santa Maria and came away with a win.
Santa Maria (11-9, 3-3 Los Padres) made 15 3-pointers in the game, but 19 points from Mark Hilbert ensured Nipomo (7-13, 4-2 Los Padres) its fourth win in a row.
After the game, Nipomo coach Daniel Hyun praised Santa Maria’s effort.
“Those kids never quit,” Hyun said. “They played really hard until the end.”
Nipomo had a nine-point lead at halftime before the Saints inched their way back into the game. A 3-point shot by Santa Maria cut the lead to five with 20 seconds left, but the Titans closed the game out at the free-throw line.
Hyun’s son, freshman point guard Daniel Hyun, fouled out at the end of the game but not before scoring 14 points. Mason Gallegos added 12 points.
Nipomo again played without rotation players Luke Wilenius and Noah Gibbons, who both sat out with injuries. Hyun hopes that both will return next week.
Nipomo hosts Lompoc on Tuesday and first place Cabrillo on Thursday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Templeton 3, Cabrillo 2
Miriam Robles had a goal and two assists to lead the Eagles to a league win.
Elizabeth Magie scored on a corner kick by Robles, and Ashley Ingle had another goal, which was also assisted by Robles.
