Prep boys basketball: Mission Prep gets win at Torrey Pines Holiday Classic

Mission Prep 68, Morse 61

Kyle Stewart had 20 points for Mission Prep, and the Royals defeated Morse at the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Escondido High.

Mission Prep head coach Terrence Harris said that the Royals started slowly and trailed by five after the first quarter. But Mission Prep held Morse to nine points in the third quarter and played ahead the rest of the game.

Stewart scored nine of his 20 points in the fourth quarter.

“We did a better job from the free-throw line this game,” Harris said. “We played one our more complete games this season.”

Junior guard Jake Jensen, who has moved into the starting point guard role for Mission Prep, finished with 12 points. Max Basile chipped in with 11 points.

Mission Prep (5-6) will take on either Oak Park or Mayfair at 4:55 p.m. on Wednesday in the Consolation Championship of the American Division.

Canyon Crest 80, San Luis Obispo 77 (OT)

After pulling out a three-point win over Bishop’s High on Monday, San Luis Obispo was on the other end of a 80-77 overtime loss to Canyon Crest Academy on Tuesday night in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.

With a three-point lead, the Tigers fouled a Canyon Crest player on a three-point shot with nine seconds left. The player made all three free-throws to send the game to overtime where San Luis Obispo was without starting point guard Seth Moore who fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Canyon Crest guards Daymian Vajda and Ryan Michaels did most of the damgae on the offensive end.

Nick Atalla had 22 points for San Luis Obispo (8-5) and six other Tigers chipped in with 9 or 10 points each.

San Luis Obispo plays against San Dieguito Academy at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Arroyo Grande 53, Flintridge Prep 48

Arroyo Grande led in every quarter of a 53-48 win over Flintridge Prep on Tuesday at the Santa Barbara Tournament.

Sharp-shooting Gage Antonio led Arroyo Grande (8-3) with 13 points. Bradley Mickey had 11 points in the first half and Will Silmon added 12 points and six rebounds.

Arroyo Grande will face either Westlake or Royal in the next round at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Carmel 40, Paso Robles 29

Trevor Weiger scored 10 points for Paso Robles in a 40-29 loss to Carmel on Tuesday at the Atascadero Holiday Tournament.

The loss pushed the Bearcats record to 3-7 on the season.
