Prep girls water polo roundup: Arroyo Grande wins, Atascadero loses in season openers
Arroyo Grande 15, Cabrillo 7
The defending PAC 8 and CIF-Southern Section Division 3 champion Arroyo Grande girls water polo team continued its winning ways to open the 2015-16 season with a convincing 15-7 win over Cabrillo on Wednesday at the Lompoc Aquatic Center.
Sarah Parson led Arroyo Grande with seven goals in the match. Six other Eagles players also scored, including Kate Empey, who found the back of the net three times. Sarah Kasper, Elle Bass, Brittany Winn, Paige Leonard and Sam Vitt each scored a goal apiece.
The Eagles (1-0) scored seven goals in the final two quarters while holding the defending Los Padres League champion Conquistadores (1-1) to just three.
Arroyo Grande will play Northwood at the El Nino tournament next week in Irvine.
Santa Ynez 9, Atascadero 7
The Atascadero girls water polo team opened the season with a loss Wednesday on the road.
Faith Archibald scored three goals to lead the Greyhounds (0-1) in the 9-7 loss. Isabella Bischel, Rachel Keyes, Jessica Diercks and Evy Cooper each added a goal. The Atascadero goalies combined for 15 saves, including 10 from Paige Coburn and five from Tina Bell.
Atascadero heads to the Mistletoe Tournament to play Pacifica on Friday.
