Five SLO County girls basketball teams move on to CIF second round

Arroyo Grande girls basketball pulled off a big upset on the road in the CIF Central Section playoffs on Friday as one of five teams from San Luis Obispo County to move on to the second round.

The No. 9 Eagles (16-9) beat No. 8 Bullard (19-11), of Fresno, 54-41 in the Central Section Division I first-round matchup.

The Tribune’s county Player of the Year in 2023-24, Diana Sorrondo, was a key contributor on both ends of the floor and finished with 18 points, including 7-of-8 from the foul line. Senior guard Karli Grier was the leading scorer for Bullard with eight points.

“The event also featured a ‘dance-off’ between the Arroyo Grande moms and the Clovis West Golden Eagles girls’ basketball team, who were in the stands scouting their next opponent,” said Scott Robertson, father of senior guard Sophia Robertson.

Arroyo Grande will face No. 1-seeded Clovis West (29-0) in Fresno on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on the road.

San Luis Obispo 58, Dinuba 31

In the Division 2 bracket, the No. 5 Tigers (26-4) were led by Bailey Hartford, who had 15 points, and Jennifer Stambaugh, who had nine points in the victory.

SLO next faces No. 4 Centennial (20-6) on the road in Bakersfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Tigers are riding a 14-game win streak and finished 10-0 in the Sunset League.

Morro Bay 55, Nipomo 26

The Pirates (11-15) were led by Zoe Fitzwater, who tallied 14 points and four assists in the win over Nipomo (12-15).

Shelby Taylor added six points and three steals for Morro Bay.

Morro Bay faces Sierra (21-7) in a rematch of the season’s opening game in which Sierra won 44-41.

Nipomo finished second in Ocean League at 5-4.

Mission Prep 70, El Diamante 54

The No. 6 Royals (14-10) won at home behind double-digit scoring from five players in Division 2 action.

Gwen Nelson led Mission Prep with 19 points and Lillie Parish tallied 13 points.

Maka Guy had 12 and her sister K.K. Guy and Mary Marsalek each added 10.

Mission Prep moves on to face No. 3 Orcutt Academy (21-4) on the road on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Atascadero 50, Golden Valley 33

Atascadero (16-11) won its first round matchup at home as the No. 4 seed in Division 4 over Golden Valley (15-10).

The Greyhounds move on to face No. 5 Mendota at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Atascadero won the Ocean League at 8-1.

Orcutt Academy 77, Paso Robles 58

The Bearcats (10-16) fell to Orcutt Academy (21-4).

Paso Robles finished 3-7 in fourth place in the Sunset League.

Six-foot-two junior Elizabeth Johnson poured in 34 points for the Spartans.

Shafter 37, Templeton 15

The No. 9 Eagles (13-14) lost on the road in Division 3.

Templeton finished 2-8 in sixth place in the Sunset League.
