5 SLO High teams win CIF titles in spring sports
In an impressive feat of spring sports success, five San Luis Obispo High School teams won CIF titles this year.
The SLO High boys and girls track and field squads, boys tennis, boys volleyball, and stunt each won championships at their respective levels.
The Tigers boys volleyball team (24-8, 12-2 Mountain League), the No. 1-ranked team in the CIF-Central Section Division 2 bracket, topped Fresno Christian on May 11 in a five-set thriller, capped off by a dramatic fifth-set 15-13 victory.
The win culminated in a kill by 6-foot-2 senior Jenson Wright, who had 11 kills in the match.
Wright and libero Nate Browning led the Tigers throughout the contest, according to Coach Trent Lunceford.
“I’m extremely happy for all the players because there are not a lot of teams that get to experience what they got to experience, winning 15-13 and the CIF title match in their own gym in front of their fans and family,” Lunceford said. “That is really special.”
Lunceford said that Browning played perhaps the best match of his high school career and Wright came up big as well.
“Nate came up with some phenomenal digs against their best hitter and prolonged a lot of rallies,” Lunceford said. “And Jenson had some extremely timely hits as well as blocks, especially in the fifth game. And he obviously had the last kill that won the title.”
SLO lost 3-0 to Wiseburn-Da Vinca on Tuesday in the state competition.
