Morro Bay athletic director, baseball coach is stepping down. Here are his new plans
Morro Bay High School athletic director and baseball coach John Andree is leaving after 25 years with the school and 37 years as a sports coach.
Andree said he will step down from his athletic director position at the end of this school year, but he will stick around as the Pirates’ baseball coach for one more year.
He said he “absolutely” had a lot of fun doing his job over the years.
“I’ve made some great friends, and the kids, I’ll never forget those kids,” Andree said. “And I’ll come back and watch them and see how they’re doing. But it’s time for someone else to take over.”
Andree says he’s “tired,” but he isn’t ready to retire just yet.
He says he’ll probably teach PE classes, instead.
“I’ve been putting 12-hour days in for the last five, six years, and, you know, I’d like to get reacquainted with my wife,” Andree laughed.
In 2012, Andree also stepped down as the high school’s football coach, when he expressed a similar desire to spend more time with his family.
“I have two boys, and the fact that I preach to them that family and education is more important than football, it’s time for me to heed those words,” Andree said at the time. “It was time to step back. It was time for me to be more involved as a parent.”
Morro Bay High School Principal Scott Schalde has not chosen a replacement.
Andree to help baseball team chase title repeat
As defending champs with a record of 14-1 in the Ocean League last season, Andree told the Tribune the Pirates have a target on their back.
Andree said they lost 12 seniors last year, but this year’s group of strong hitters, fielders and pitchers are knowledgeable and continually growing.
“We think if we keep getting better, we’d be pretty tough to beat,” Andree said after Tuesday’s game against Nipomo.
Resignation follows football coach’s exit
On March 16, Morro Bay lost its head football coach, Jake Goossen-Brown, to a new job.
Goossen-Brown left after three years at the school, where he led the team to the CIF Central Section, Southern Regional and State championships.
He is now the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks.
