SLO High standout named top finisher of football player of season reader poll

After another outpouring of votes in a Tribune readers’ poll, San Luis Obispo High’s Rory Devaney led all candidates with nearly 30,000 votes as the choice for the county’s top high school football player of 2021.

The powerful Tigers senior linebacker was a force to be reckoned with throughout the season, blowing up plays with big hits, forced fumbles, interceptions and all-around disruptive defense, as shown in his senior season Hudl highlights.

In a poll that tallied more than 84,000 votes, including many who won fall player of the week polls, Devaney recorded 29,869 votes, or 36% of the tally.

Other top finishers included Paso Robles’ defensive lineman and tight end Bastiaan Jauregay, who received 17,961 votes, or 21%; Mission Prep quarterback Colby White, who earned 10,833, or 13%; Arroyo Grande quarterback Max Perrett, who garnered 10,036, or 12%; Nipomo cornerback and receiver Raemer Agnes, at 5,539, or 7%, Morro Bay quarterback Nicky Johnson, at 2,729, or 3%, and Arroyo Grande’s Kaden Tynes (1,627 or 2%) and Makai Puga 1,542 or 2%) — both of whom play running back and defensive positions for the Eagles.

A group of others from schools countywide rounded out the field of players.

The poll is meant to be a fun way for fans to support top student athletes, and offer their opinions after a season of big wins, fierce battles, and multiple local teams with winning seasons.

Overall records included Arroyo Grande (8-4), Mission Prep (10-1), Nipomo (7-4), Paso Robles (7-4), and San Luis Obispo (6-4). Coast Union finished 9-3 in 8-man football.

And Morro Bay (currently 8-6) plays in the state Division 7-AA at 6 p.m. Saturday against Fall River, a game that’s expected to see some snow in the mountain community of McArthur, California, north of Redding.

Templeton finished its season 5-6 and Atascadero was 3-8.
