High school football results: 3 SLO County teams post shutouts in Week 1

Multiple San Luis Obispo County teams recorded commanding wins Friday night early in the season in non-league high school football play — including three shutout victories.

Here are the results in week 2 of the local football season.

Atascadero 35, Torres 0

Atascadero (1-0) dominated with a 35-0 win against Torres of Madera, kicking off a promising start after a challenging 0-7 spring season last school year affected by COVID-19 disruptions.

The Greyhounds opened their season at home with a strong performance from multiple players.

“We had three rushing touchdowns and two throwing,” said Greyhounds Coach Vic Cooper. “And our defense got the shutout and really forced some turnovers.”

Cooper said quarterback Evan Moscardi had two touchdown passes to Dallas Parish, and Cole Tanner posted three scoring runs.

Mason Degnan hauled in an interception, and Isaac Contreras recorded a fumble recovery to pace a “stout defense.”

Morro Bay 38, Carpinteria 0

The Pirates (1-1) also pitched a shutout in a dominating home win against Carpinteria.

Coach Jake Goossen-Brown said that junior quarterback Nicky Johnson threw four touchdown passes, one to each of the Pirate receivers. Johnson totaled more than 200 yards passing.

Christian Merrill, Jakob Avila, Eithan Lisman and Dylan Turner all snagged scoring catches in the game.

Turner punched into two rushing scores along with more than 100 yards on the ground.

The Pirates are coming off a 1-4 spring record.

“Today, we executed and threw the ball really well,” Goossen-Brown said. “We were taking what the defense was giving us.”

Goossen-Brown said, with a chuckle, that Turner and Johnson were so locked in on reading the defense, they were practically finishing his play calls before he could get the message out.

“Both guys are really big on studying game tape and they come into my office to really go over that,” Goossen-Brown said. “The kids, offensive line and defense line as well, did great today. For Morro Bay to get a shutout, that’s huge. I don’t remember the last time our school had one.”

Paso Robles 14, Independence 6

The Bearcats (1-1) bounced back from a loss to Lompoc in Week 1 to find the victory column.

Paso Robles won 14-6 at home over Independence of Bakersfield in a well-contested game, said Coach Matt Carroll.

Paso Robles got two touchdowns from running back Leo Kemp in front of a crowd of at least 1,000, according to a post on MaxPreps.com.

Kemp had a 10-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter with two minutes left to help secure the win.

Defensive back Bryson Boneso hauled in an interception in the first half.

“We saw a huge improvement over our first game,” Carroll said. “I thought both teams played very well. Independence was tough, and we had to grind this one out.”

The Bearcats next face Buchanan of Clovis in a Thursday night game.

“They’re one of the best teams in the state, and we’ll have our work cut out for us,” Carroll said.

Nipomo 56, Cabrillo 0

The Titans (2-0) followed up on their dramatic 21-16 victory over Santa Ynez in Week 1 to dominate Cabrillo in Week 2 with a 56-0 blowout win.

Coach Tony Dodge said his squad was up 49-0 at halftime and had a handful of sacks.

“We pretty much held them at the line of scrimmage throughout the game,” Dodge said.

Quarterback Nate Reese had five total touchdowns.

Gabe Evans, Josh Caw-it, and Julian Ojeda all were involved in the scoring action on the easy win for the Titans.

Nipomo has a bye next week and its game against Hoover scheduled for two weeks from now was canceled.

“We’re trying to line up a game for next Friday,” Dodge said. “That’s to be determined.”

Centennial 47, Arroyo Grande 21

Arroyo Grande fell to 0-2 with a 47-21 loss to Centennial (2-0) of Bakersfield.

Makai Puga made his season debut with a long rushing touchdown, and quarterback Max Perrett connected with Damion Santos on two touchdown passes.
