Morro Bay High graduate Matt Hansen drained a 30-foot putt for birdie in a three-man playoff Thursday to clinch a spot in the final round of the Western Amateur Championship in Chicago.
Hansen, a Los Osos native and recent UC Davis grad, birdied the final two holes of regulation to finish 5 under alongside Nicolas Echavarria and Adam Schenk. The three entered a sudden-death playoff for the right to play in the final 16, and after all three made par on the first hole, Hansen’s long-range putt on a par 4 gave him a one-stroke victory.
He advances to single-elimination match play today, when he will face tournament leader Doug Ghim in the first head-to-head round. Ghim topped the leaderboard by two strokes, shooting a 6-under 65 Thursday to finish at 14 under overall.
