Cuesta baseball beats Santa Barbara, softball splits with Moorpark

The Cuesta baseball team added breathing room between them and second-place Santa Barbara, winning 8-6 at home on Tuesday. Brendan Jenkins allowed one earned run and struck out five Vaqueros in six innings for the win.

Santa Barbara had seven errors, while the Cougars offense produced 14 hits.

Dustin Miller was 4 for 5 with a run, two stolen bases and a pair of RBI, and catcher Nate Javine was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Cuesta holds a one-game edge over the Vaqueros and will play Moorpark on Thursday.

The Cougars split a home doubleheader with the conference-leading Raiders. Cuesta won the opener before the Raiders retook their half-game lead in the standings.

Demi Danell allowed one earned run in 14 innings for Cuesta, but an error with one out in the sixth inning of the second game led to all four Moorpark runs.

Ami Hood was 2 for 5 with a double and a home run.

The Cougars play host to third-place Santa Barbara on Thursday. The Cougars, Raiders and Vaqueros are all within a game of each other in the standings.
