Cuesta men’s track and field team wins Western State Coastal Meet, women place third
The Cuesta men’s track and field team won the Western State Coastal Meet on Friday with a score of 174 points. West LA (136) was the only other team in the field of six to reach 100 points. Matt Tyler won two of the Cougars’ seven events, placing first in the high jump in 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches and the 110 hurdles in 15.83 seconds.
Sean McDermott and Roberto Bazan placed first and second, respectively, in the 1,500. Bazan won the 3,000 meter race, followed by McDermott.
Joe Reeves had a season-high 16-2 to win the pole vault in a jumpoff against teammate Joe Dreyer, and Aaron Cheeks won the javalin (166-5 3/4 ). Devon Hallinan added a win in the 800 (1:56.73).
The Cuesta women were third with 68 points, trailing Ventura (186) and West LA (124). The Cougars won five individual events, led by Miranda Daschian, who took the 800 (2:27.04) and the 1,500 (4:46.77). Defending state champion Augusta Thomason won the pole vault (12-4), and Christine Moreno won the 400 in 58.12 with the third best time in school history. Madeline Ogle also won the 3K (10:53.67).
The Cougars will send decathaletes and heptathletes to the 2016 CCCAA Southern California Regional Multi-Event Finals on Tuesday and Wednesday in Cerritos.
Cal Poly at three California meets
Peyton Bilo ran the fifth-fastest time in Mustangs history in the 5,000 meters at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
Bilo, who finished eighth out of 24 in the third heat, posted a time of 16:13.55.
At the Stanford Invitational, Katie Izzo won Heat 7 in the 1,500, posting the 10th fastest time in school history at 4:26.24.
Nick Woolf was second in Heat 2 of the 3,000 steeplechase in 8:48.03, the sixth-fastest time in school history.
At the Bruin Legends Invitational, Cal Poly’s Nick Bultman was fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 177-3.
