College Roundup: Cuesta baseball beats LA Pierce to move into first place

The Cuesta baseball team beat LA Pierce 9-0 to take sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference standings. Brendan Jenkins pitched six innings, and three relievers combined for the shutout.

Dustin Miller had three hits, three runs and two RBI, and Hunter Reade added three hits of his own for the Cougars (15-9, 8-4). The game completed the first leg of conference play, which will resume after a break April 5.

Softball

Allan Hancock 5, Cuesta 0; Cuesta 4, Allan Hancock 0

The Cuesta softball team split a doubleheader against Allan Hancock on Wednesday. Demi Danell pitched in each game for the Cougars, picking up both decisions. Danell pitched a combined 13 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits, with two coming in the second game.

Danell had three hits on the day, and Rebekah Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the second game. Hernandez caught Danell in the first game and closed out the win, earning the final two outs in the second game.

Cuesta is 16-7 overall and 6-2 in the Western State Conference, a half-game out of first place.
