Cuesta College women’s basketball team comes up short in Oxnard
The Cuesta College women’s basketball team took a lead into halftime, but couldn’t hold on in a 63-48 loss at Oxnard on Saturday night.
The Cougars (8-18, 3-7 Western State Conference) led 28-21 at halftime, holding Oxnard to just eight points in the second quarter.
But Cuesta scored just nine points in the fourth quarter, turning a 41-39 deficit after three quarters into a 15-point loss. The Cougars had 22 turnovers and shot just 10-of-20 from the free-throw line.
“In the second half, we just ran out of gas,” Cuesta head coach Ron Barba said. “We had the game down to three late in the game. It came down to turnovers and missed free throws.”
Angela llaverias had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Cuesta. Templeton High alum Autumn Russell had 12 points and eight rebounds. Maci Branstetter also scored 12 points.
Juliette Marquez led all scores with 21 points for Oxnard (14-8, 7-3 WSC).
