Cuesta baseball team sweeps Orange Coast

The Cuesta baseball team finished a sweep of two-time defending California Community College Athletic Association state champion Orange Coast on Saturday with a 3-2 win in 11 innings.

Dustin Miller was 2 for 5 with a run scored for Cuesta. The Cougars scored the winning run when pinch-runner Todd Valliere scored on a two-out throwing error by Orange Coast.

Cuesta plays at Saddleback at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Cuesta women top Santa Barbara

Center Autumn Russell scored 26 points — including a 10-for-11 effort from the free-throw line — to lead the Cuesta women’s basketball team to a 75-72 win over Santa Barbara on Saturday.

Angela Llaverias added a season-high 19 points for the Cougars, who next play at Oxford at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Cuesta men fall to SB 85-80

The Cuesta men’s basketball team’s 14-game winning streak against Santa Barbara was snapped Saturday when the Cougars fell 85-80 at home.

The Cougars trailed at halftime by a score of 36-21.

Center Roberto Mantovani poured in 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Cuesta. Karem Ozel added 14 points before he and Mantovani fouled out near the end of the game.

Cuesta plays at Oxford at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Softball team takes two

The Cuesta softball team earned two decisive victories over Victor Valley on Saturday.

The Cougars won 22-1 in Game 1, and Cuesta scored 17 runs over the first two innings. Rebekah Hernandez and Christina Solis combined to allow only two hits in the game.

Cuesta won Game 2 by a score of 9-0. Demi Danell tossed a one-hit shutout for the Cougars.

Both games lasted just 5 innings because of a mercy rule.
