Cuesta baseball shuts out defending champion Orange Coast

The Cuesta baseball team shut out the defending CCCAA state champion Orange Coast for the second straight day, winning 2-0 on Friday. Louis Raymond struck out seven, surviving 10 Orange Coast hits en route to a complete game shutout.

The Cougars scored in the seventh inning when Dustin Miller singled with one out. Miller would move to third on Garrett Giovannelli’s intentional walk, which was followed by a wild pitch. Pirates reliever Austin Moore made catcher TK McWhertor hit a routine ground ball to shortstop Nolan Powers, who couldn’t handle it, scoring both Miller and Giovannelli.

The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs in the next inning, but Orange Coast would ground out to end the inning.

Nick Burnham and Will Ruiz each had two of the Cougars’ eight hits.

Cuesta and Orange Coast complete their three game series Saturday at noon.
