Cuesta women’s basketball teams fall in play-in game

The Cuesta College women’s basketball team fell in its CCCA Southern California Regional wildcard playoff game against Riverside, 71-61, in Riverside on Wednesday.

The Cougars (23-8) shot just 23 of 81 from floor — 28 percent — and 5 of 22 from 3-point range. Cuesta trailed 39-28 at the half. The Cougars led the state in free throw percentage at 74.1 percent, but were only 10 of 21 in the game.

“The defense was there,” said head coach Ron Barba, whose team forced 35 turnovers. “But we just couldn’t get a basket to fall.

“The basket could have been 10 feet around, and I’m not sure we could have scored any more. It was just one of those nights.”

Anika Rovig lead the Cougars with 21 points and six rebounds, and Ashley Gamber registered 17 points.
