Cuesta Basketball: Cuesta men win tourney opener
Cuesta College’s men’s basketball had no trouble with L.A. Southwest, winning handily 92-74 at the Grossmont College Tournament on Friday.
Tayler Thompson had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Rafael Casanova had 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting and had 10 rebounds. Keshawn Liggins added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
The Cougars led 42-33 at halftime and shot 76 percent from the floor in the second half and 61 percent for the game.
Cuesta’s 3-2 zone defense limited L.A. Southwest to 38 percent shooting for the game.
The Cougars (8-1) play host Grossmont today in the semifinals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
CUESTA 85, COLLEGE OF THE DESERT 46
After a dominating performance in the quarterfinals against Victor Valley on Thursday, the Cougars (6-2) continued to dominate in its own Phillips 66 Tournament, winning easily in the semifinals.
Up 41-29 at halftime, Kendra Losa came off the bench to join Melody Ayers in sparking a run down the stretch that put the game away for good.
Ayers had seven steals, six assists and 10 points. Jerrica Crosby had a game-high 21 points and six rebounds, while Falecia Cabral scored 11 points and led the Cougars with 11 rebounds.
The Cougars move on to face Las Positas College in the championship game today at 4 p.m.
