Cuesta College Roundup: Cougars win in women’s water polo
Rachel Gruetzmacher scored five goals, and the Cuesta College women’s water polo team opened up an early five-goal advantage en route to a 13-8 victory at home against Ventura on Wednesday.
Shanae Lauridsen and Molly Casey also scored twice for the Cougars (17-4, 4-0 Western State Conference), who jumped out to a 6-1 lead and finished the first quarter with a 7-3 advantage before scoring twice in each of the next two frames.
Marti-Rae Grois made nine saves in goal.
Cougars roll in men’s water polo
Arroyo Grande High graduate Hassan El-Effendi and Lucas Johns both scored four goals to lead a balanced attack in Cuesta’s 20-6 victory over visiting Ventura.
Trevor Collins scored three goals for the Cougars (13-8, 2-1 WSC), and Logan Beurloo, Trevor Whitsitt and Max Draga each had two.
Jacob Aldaco made seven saves in goal, and Sal Arredondo had five as Cuesta overcame a one-goal deficit through one quarter to outscore its opponent 18-3 the rest of the way.
L.A. Pierce sweeps Cuesta in volleyball
The Cougars fell at home 25-21, 25-15, 25-20.
Gabby David led Cuesta (5-9, 1-2 WSC) with six kills, while Whitney Meyer recorded a team-high 16 digs. Faith Sierra dished out 10 assists.
“We just dug a hole each game,” Cuesta coach Roche Nystrom said in a news release. “We will have to get tougher defensively.”
Alexandria Bowman and Jessica Martinez both had 11 kills for Pierce, which opened up an 11-3 lead to start the second set.
