Cuesta women win water polo league opener

Nine different players scored as the Cuesta College women’s water polo team opened Western State Conference play with a 9-3 victory on the road Wednesday over defending conference champion L.A. Valley.

Mart-Rae Grois made 14 saves in goal and added five steals and two assists for the Cougars (5-1, 1-0), who broke a 2-2 tie after one quarter by scoring twice in each of the next two frames while holding L.A. Valley without another goal until the fourth.

Scoring for Cuesta were Ashley Codorniz, Danny Sennessy, Rachel Gruetzmacher, Haylee Mariucci, Sam Baker, Emily Crane, Shanae Lauridsen, Molly Casey and Haley Shafer.
