Cuesta names male and female athletes of the month for September

Women’s water polo standout Isabella Manuele and men’s cross country runner Sean McDermott were selected as the Cuesta College athletes of the month for September, the school announced Wednesday. 

Manuele has helped the Cougars’ water polo team to a 17-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark against Western State Conference opponents. 

She leads the team with 65 goals and broke the school record for exclusions drawn (49), which was previously held by two-time All-American Ally Bernard in 2011.

McDermott, a freshman, won the season-opening Tour de Cuesta by nearly 45 seconds, crossing the finish line in 22 minutes, 10 seconds. It was the fourth-fastest time recorded on the course and helped the Cougars to a team victory.

McDermott also placed fifth individually at the SoCal Preview in San Diego, improving his time to 21:01.4.
