Cal Poly volleyball kicks off tournament with upset win over No. 19 W. Kentucky

The Cal Poly volleyball team started strong in the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic, upsetting No. 19 Western Kentucky 3-1 on Friday in the tournament opener in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Mustangs took the match in four sets, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-8.

“This was our most consistent match, when we are consistent we are a pretty good team and we did pretty well against a great opponent” head coach Sam Crosson said in a release.

Junior Taylor Nelson led the Mustangs with 47 of the team’s 57 assists. She also had 19 digs and a .600 attack percentage.

Sophomore Alexis Clewis led the team with 14 kills.

Along with Clewis, senior Raeann Greisen and sophomore Adlee Van Winden also recorded double-digit kills, 13 and 12, respectively.

“Raeann had a really nice match, she was aggressive and smart. Gruenwald was up there as well,” Crosson said.

Cal Poly ended the match with a .284 attack percentage compared to Western Kentucky’s .218.

The Mustangs’ win puts them at 3-1 on the season.

The Mustangs will be back on the court at 8 a.m. Saturday to take on Arkansas State and then back at 5 p.m. the same day to face St. Louis.
