Cal Poly baseball team routed by UC Irvine at home
The Cal Poly baseball team struggled in the later innings, giving up nine runs after the seventh in an 11-2 loss to UC Irvine on Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.
UC Irvine (28-20, 8-9 Big West Conference) scored five in the seventh inning and four more in the ninth inning. Adam Alcantara was 1 for 5 with a homer and four RBI, and Mitchell Holland had three hits for the Anteaters. John Brontesma was 2 for 3 with a homer and three runs.
Cal Poly (27-22, 8-9 Big West) mustered just six hits. John Schuknecht led the Mustangs, going 1 for 2 with a homer, an RBI and two walks. Dylan Doherty was 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI.
Craig Colen allowed just two hits and a run in five innings of work for Cal Poly. But the bullpen was hit hard, with Austin Dondanville (1-1) allowing three runs in 1 2/3 innings, and Cam Schneider allowing five runs — two earned — in 1 1/3 innings.
The Mustangs made five errors.
The series concludes Sunday, with first pitch at Baggett Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
