Cal Poly baseball team takes series in Hawaii
The Cal Poly baseball team won two of three games over Hawaii this weekend, clinching the series win with a 5-2 victory on Sunday in Honolulu.
Hawaii had entered the series in first place in the Big West Conference.
Jarred Zill (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out four.
Justin Calomeni earned his fifth save, striking out four of the five batters he faced.
Josh George was 2 for 4 with a run, and Brett Barbier was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs for Cal Poly (21-13, 4-2 Big West). Alex McKenna, Kyle Marinconz, John Schuknecht and Michael Sanderson each had an RBI for the Mustangs.
Kekai Rios had two hits for Hawaii (17-17, 6-3 Big West).
Saturday’s game
The Mustangs recovered after blowing a 4-1 lead to earn a 5-4 win over Hawaii on Saturday night in Honolulu.
Marinconz had four hits and two RBI to lead Cal Poly. He drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie with a single to left-center field that scored Brett Binning, who had walked with two outs.
Binning was 1 for 2 with two walks and scored three runs.
Justin Bruihl (1-2) earned the win in relief, and Spencer Howard earned his first collegiate save.
Erich Uelmen allowed four runs — three earned — in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed nine hits, walked two and struck out three.
Kevin Morgan had two hits for Cal Poly.
Jonathan Weeks had three hits for Hawaii.
