College roundup: Cal Poly downs UC Riverside in men’s tennis

The Cal Poly men’s tennis team topped UC Riverside 4-0 at the UCR Tennis Complex on Saturday.

Cal Poly junior Ben Donovan clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4, straight set winner over Julian Ruffin.

After Cal Poly swept the first four singles matches, the teams decided to end the match without playing doubles.

Cal Poly’s Axel Damiens won a pair of sets 6-2, 6-1 over Calvin Ngo, and Garrett Auproux tacked on 6-4, 6-1, victories over the Highlanders’ Sean Yun.

Corey Pang added a 7-6, 6-0 win for the Mustangs over Kyle McCann, his ninth straight singles match victory.

The match was moved to Saturday because of inclement weather on Friday.

Cal Poly (10-8, 2-0 Big West) will play at UC Irvine at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Hirsch leads way for Cal Poly women’s golf

Senior Madison Hirsch earned a top-15 finish to lead the Cal Poly women’s golf team to a 12th place finished at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational on Saturday at The Rawls Course.

Hirsch shot a final-round 77 and had a career-best 54-hole six over 222 aggregate on the par -72 course to finish in a five-way tie for 13th place.

The Mustangs had a four-person final-round of 322 for a 57-over 921 total and 12th place out of 14.

Texas Tech won its own tournament, rallying from fourth place on the final day. The Red Raiders carded a 287 Saturday for a three-over 867 total. Purdue was second at 880, followed by Kansas, who trailed by a stroke and second-round leader BYU finished tied for fifth with Iowa.

Kansas’ Yupaporn Kawinpakorn carded a final-round 72 for a seven-under 209 total, beating out Sarah Brown of Texas Tech by a stroke. Purdue’s Anna Appert Lund was third at 214.

Cal Poly will compete in the Big West Conference Championship, beginning next Sunday through Tuesday at the Kapalua Golf Club in Lahaina, Hawaii.
