Cal Poly baseball drop third straight game in 10-1 loss to Santa Clara

Santa Clara scored six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-1 victory Tuesday night over visiting Cal Poly in a non-conference baseball game at Schott Stadium.

The loss is the third straight for the Mustangs (17-10), who had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning and were previously 14-1 in games in which they scored first.

Kyle Marinconz singled with one out, moved to second on a Brett Barbier walk and scored on a Michael Sanderson single for Poly’s only run.

Freddy Erlandson relieved Santa Clara (13-14) starter Mitchell White after the shaky first inning and allowed two hits, no runs and had three strikeouts over six innings.

After tying the game 1-1 in the fourth, Santa Clara scored six runs in the fifth on six hits and an error. Santa Clara tacked on three runs in the eighth, two unearned.

Andrew Berstein was handed the loss, allowing the first two runs of the fifth inning.

Marinconz extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and Cal Poly’s five hits were by four different hitters.

The Mustangs begin Big West play on Friday night, playing host defending conference champion Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m.
