Cal Poly’s Taylor Nelson selected for 2016 USA College National Team
Cal Poly volleyball standout Taylor Nelson was chosen to be a member of the 2016 College National Team, according to a release put out by the school Monday afternoon.
Nelson, a sophomore setter, made the team following a three-day tryout in Colorado in February. She received word from USA Volleyball and head coach Karch Kiraly that she was invited to travel with the team to Indianapolis in late June.
“Taylor’s selection to the USA Collegiate National Team program is a great accomplishment for both her and our volleyball program here at Cal Poly,” head coach Sam Crosson said.
The release said Nelson’s trip to Indianapolis is “considered a second tryout for the USA Women’s National Team” with staff evaluating players for potential roster positions in the future.
Nelson earned first-team all-Big West Conference honors last fall after recording 1,052 assists, including 17 double-doubles along the way. Entering her junior season, Nelson ranks seventh in program history with 1,932 assists.
“Taylor’s growth on the court has been instrumental in our success as a program,” Crosson said. “She’s well deserving of this recognition and honor of being named one of the best setters in the country.”
Before competition begins in Indianapolis, Nelson will head to DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., for a four-day training session.
