College roundup: Cal Poly baseball team beats Wichita State 7-6
The Cal Poly baseball team clinched the final game of a three-game, nonconference series Saturday with a 7-6 win over Wichita State.
Erich Uelmen earned his fourth victory of the year, and Justin Calomeni earned his second save of the season for the Mustangs.
Uelmen (4-0) hung on for the win, despite giving up five runs and eight hits. Uelmen struck out a career-high eight batters over 6 2/3 innings.
Calomeni allowed a run and two hits in the ninth but induced a groundout with the bases loaded for the save.
Cal Poly’s Michael Sanderson had an RBI single in the first inning, Alex McKenna added an RBI single in the second and Ben Polshuk had a bloop single in the third for an early 3-0 lead.
Wichita State answered with a run of its own in the fourth on a home run by Greyson Jenista, but Cal Poly scored again in the fifth on an RBI single by Cooper Moore.
The Shockers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, trimming the Cal Poly lead to one.
John Schuknecht hit a two-run double in the sixth, and Sanderson had a sacrifice fly in the 7-3 lead.
Wichita State (7-16) scored two runs in the seventh and added a run in the ninth before the bases-loaded groundout with the bases loaded to end the game.
Schukencht and Sanderson each had a single and a double, both driving in two runs, and Moore had two singles and an RBI.
Cal Poly (15-7) finished with 10 hits.
Cal Poly will play eight of its next nine game at home, returning to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday night against CSU Bakersfield.
Cal Poly 7, Wichita State 2 (Friday)
The Cal Poly baseball team scored three times in the first inning en route to a 7-2 victory over Wichita State to even their series Friday.
Schuknecht had an RBI double, and Polshuk and Moore each singled to drive in two more in the the first inning.
Cal Poly added a pair of runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Marinconz and an RBI single by Schuknecht. The Mustangs added two more in the ninth on a passed ball and a base-loaded walk drawn by Dylan Doherty.
Wichita State had nine hits to Cal Poly’s eight.
Templeton High graduate Spencer Howard (1-0) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Kyle Smith for the victory.
Wichita State scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a groundout and an RBI single by Chase Rader.
The Shockers used five pitchers in the game, and starter Zach Lewis (0-4) was pulled after allowing three runs, two hits and two walks in just 2/3 of an inning.
Cal Poly beach volleyball team loses twice in Malibu
The Cal Poly beach volleyball team had its two-match winning streak halted with losses to Nebraska and No.1 Pepperdine on Friday in Malibu.
The Waves (10-0) swept the Mustangs (2-6) 5-0, as Taylor Nelson and Savannah Niemen came closest to winning in a 21-18, 21-15, loss to Heidi Dyer and Taylor Racich.
Nebraska (5-4) also swept Cal Poly 5-0. Nelson and Niemen forced a third set in their match, losing 19-21, 21-15, 15-9.
