Four Cal Poly football players set to participate in NFL Pro Day
Four ex-Cal Poly football players will get the chance to showcase their talents in front of professional scouts during the school’s NFL Pro Day on Monday.
Quarterback Chris Brown, linebacker Burton De Koning and wide receivers Willie Tucker and Jordan Hines will participate in a series of drills on campus, beginning with a warm-up period at 8 a.m. in the Mott Athletics Center weight room.
After one hour of testing, the players will move to the upper fields of the Cal Poly Sports Complex. There they will compete in the 40-yard dash, pro shuttle, three-cone drill, long shuttle, vertical jump and broad jump, among other selected position drills.
Brown was among the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the FCS during his time as a Mustang. He finished his career with more than 3,000 yards rushing and passing and was named the team’s most valuable player this past season.
De Koning, who transferred to Cal Poly from Nevada following his sophomore year, was a force at linebacker as a senior. In being named the team’s most valuable defensive player, De Koning made 82 tackles with three sacks. He recorded a season-high 17 tackles against Big Sky Conference champion Southern Utah.
Tucker overcame a series of injuries to have a productive senior season. He lead the Mustangs with 17 catches for 383 yards and six touchdowns, averaging nearly 23 yards per reception. For his career, Tucker caught 77 passes for 1,477 yards and 17 touchdowns while playing in Cal Poly’s run-first, triple-option offense.
Hines certainly has the physical attributes to continue playing after graduation. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound wide receiver twice earned Cal Poly’s Legion Award as a “team leader who plays hard during practice as well as in games and exemplifies being good on a daily basis.”
Hines caught nine passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns during the fall.
The NFL Draft will be held April 28-30 in Chicago, with the Tennessee Titans owning the first overall selection.
Cal Poly is scheduled to begin spring practices April 6, and the annual spring game is set for 1 p.m. April 30 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
