Former Cal Poly women’s basketball standout Molly Schlemer is enjoying her second professional season overseas as a member of the Urla BLD in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League.

Last week, the 6-foot-5 center who led the Mustangs to their only NCAA Tournament appearance in program history in 2012-13, was named the Eurobasket.com Player of the Week.

The 23-year-old Schlemer recorded a double-double with 40 points and 23 rebounds, helping her team secure a 94-51 victory over Nevsehir GHSIM. Although Urla BLD sits ninth in the 12-team Group B standings with an 8-14 overall record, Schlemer has been one of the most consistent performers in the league.

For a player who concluded her Cal Poly career as the fifth-leading scorer and rebounder in school history, Schlemer hasn’t missed a beat as a professional.

The former Big West Player of the Year ranks in the top-10 in the TKBL for both points (21.3) and rebounds (13.3) per game, leading the team in both categories.

Her strong play this season has been built on the foundation laid last year in Germany. After not being selected in the WNBA draft coming out of college, Schlemer joined the ChemCats Chemnitz of Germany’s Damen Basketball Bundesliga, the country’s most competitive league.

She went on to average 14.8 points and 9.2 rebounds en route to becoming the only first-year player to make the Eurbasket.com honors list.

Urla BLD has one regular season game remaining against fourth-place Cankaya (14-6) on Friday.

Uelmen picks up Big West honor

Cal Poly sophomore Erich Uelmen was selected as the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week following his standout performance against Sacramento State.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander pitched his second complete game of the season in a 4-0 victory over the Hornets during the second game of a nonconference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Uelmen scattered five hits, struck out six and walked one, improving his record to 3-0 this season. He retired the first 10 batters he faced, and 14 of the first 15. Uelmen retired the side in order five time in the victory.

It was the first career Big West accolade for Uelmen, a Las Vegas native. He also threw a complete game in Cal Poly’s 6-2 victory against then-No. 14 UCLA in late February.

The Mustangs (13-6) continue their 10-game road stint this week with a three-game series at Wichita State beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Cuesta basketball camp returns

Youth basketball players looking to sharpen their skills will have the opportunity to do just that over spring break.

The Cuesta College Spring Skills Hoop Camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 28, March 30 and April 1 at the Cuesta Gym. The camp, which is partnered with the Jr. NBA, costs $120 and is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 17.

Men’s basketball assistant coaches Alex Raj and Casey Blair will serve as the camp instructors. The three-day camp aims to “stress the fundamental aspects of the game, while creating a fun and interactive environment.”

Those interested can sign up at http://www.cuesta.edu/communityprogams.

Larry Lee to host summer camps

Two sessions of the Larry Lee Baseball camp are scheduled for June and July.

Cal Poly’s 14th-year head baseball coach and the rest of the Mustangs coaching staff will lead two camps for kids ages 7 to 12 that focus on “position specific training, fundamental skill development, and drills concentrating on throwing, hitting, pitching, catching and defensive techniques.

“Players are grouped according to both age and ability levels, placing players of similar abilities and positions in the same group to create a more effective learning environment.”

The first session will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 13-16, and the second is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 18-21. Both will be held at Sinsheimer Baseball Stadium.

The cost to participate is $200 and those interested can go to larryleebaseball.com for an application.
