College sports roundup: Cal Poly baseball team drops finale at Sacramento State
The Cal Poly baseball team tied the score in the top of the eighth inning but then gave up the winning run in the bottom half in a 3-2 loss to Sacramento State in the series finale Sunday in Sacramento.
The Mustangs took two of three after winning both games of a doubleheader Saturday.
Sacramento State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Mustangs (13-6) evened it up with runs in the fifth and eighth innings, despite managing just five hits and two walks. Nick Meyer was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run, and Alex McKenna had an RBI.
Josh George, Kyle Marinconz, Michael Sanderson and Brett Barbier had the other hits for Cal Poly.
Cam Schnieder pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two runs — one earned — with seven strikeouts.
Justin Calomeni (2-2) allowed the eighth inning run in relief, giving up three hits and walking one while striking out two.
Tyler Beardsley (2-0) earned the win in relief for Sacramento State (10-8).
SOFTBALL
Cal Poly at the San Diego Classic II
The Mustangs dropped two games Sunday in a tournament in San Diego, losing three out of four over the weekend.
Ohio State beat Cal Poly 7-2, and San Diego beat the Mustangs 14-7.
Sierra Hyland allowed four runs — three earned — over four innings, striking out six while walking three in the loss to the Buckeyes (15-7).
Stephanie Heyward was 2 for 2, and Courtney Taylor and Breana West went 2 for 4.
In the loss to San Diego (10-20), Makenna Young was 3 for 3 with two RBI, and Chelsea Convissar was 2 for 4 with two runs.
Lindsey Chalmers allowed seven runs — six earned — in three innings, striking out one and walking one.
On Saturday, Hyland struck out 10 to lead the Mustangs to a 6-1 win over Seattle in the first game, but Cal Poly followed that with a 5-1 loss to San Diego State in the second game.
Hyland has struck out 10 or more in eight of her 13 starts this season.
Young homered in the win, the first homer of the freshman’s career, and went 2 for 3 with three RBI.
Heyward was 3 for 4 for Cal Poly.
Chalmers allowed five runs on five hits in the second game, allowing a grand slam in the fourth inning.
West was 2 for 3 for the Mustangs.
