College sports roundup: Cal Poly baseball sweeps doubleheader in Sacramento

The Cal Poly baseball team took both games of a doubleheader against Sacramento State, winning 6-4 in the first game and 4-0 in the second.

The Mustangs scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning after Sacramento State held a 2-0 lead to break open the first game. The inning started with back-to-back-to-back doubles by Brett Barbier, John Schuknecht and Kyle Marinconz, with Marinconz bringing in both Barbier and Schuknecht.

Michael Sanderson singled to move Marinconz to third and Nick Meyer scored Marinconz on a sac bunt. Dylan Doherty walked, and after a flyout, Alex McKenna hit a 3-run home run to left field on a 1-0 count.

The six runs were all attributed to losing pitcher Sam Long, who allowed six hits, six runs and had three walks over four innings.

Sacramento State answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth, using a pair of singles and a Cal Poly throwing error to score the run.

The Hornets tacked on another run in the eighth, before Justin Bruihl closed the door for his second save of the season. Bruihl struck out one and allowed one hit over two innings.

Kyle Smith (3-1) scattered 10 hits over seven innings, allowing four runs, three earned and struck out five.

In the second game, McKenna, Barbier and Schuknecht each had solo home runs in Cal Poly’s 4-0 win.

Erich Uelmen pitched a complete game shutout for the Mustangs, allowing five hits, one walk and struck out six for his third win of the season.

Barbier and Schuknecht both homered in the fourth, and McKenna hit one of his own in the fifth.

In the eighth, Schuknecht hit a sac fly to score Josh George for an added insurance run.

With the pair of wins, Cal Poly improves to 13-5 and will conclude the three-game series against Sacramento State (9-8) on Sunday.
