Cal Poly softball team beats Stanford, loses to Florida State at tournament

The Cal Poly softball team split two games at the Louisville Slugger Classic on Saturday at Stanford.

At 15-6, Cal Poly matched its best 21-game start to the season, equaling the mark by the 1995 team.

The Mustangs downed Stanford (11-9) in five innings, 10-2, behind a two-hitter by Sierra Hyland (9-3). She struck out 10 and walked two, giving up two earned runs. Cal Poly scored seven runs in the second innings, highlighted by two-run doubles by Stephanie Heyward and Betsy Colburn. Heyward went 3 for 3 with two RBI and three runs, and Breana West was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

In the second game, Florida State (20-3) rallied from a 1-0 deficit for the win.

Lindsey Chalmers (6-3) allowed three earned runs in four innings, striking out three while allowing four hits and three walks. Colburn was 1 for 2 with an RBI for the Mustangs.
