College sports roundup: Cal Poly rolls to baseball win over Grand Canyon

The Cal Poly baseball scored three runs in the first and seventh inning en route to a 7-0 win over Grand Canyon on Friday night in Phoenix.

Kyle Marinconz hit a bases-loaded double in the seventh, clearing the bases and giving the Mustangs (11-3) a 6-0 lead. He finished 1 for 5 with the double and three RBI.

Alex McKenna was 3 for 5 with a run and a stolen base, and Michael Sanderson was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run.

Kyle Smith (2-1) tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out six while not walking a batter.

The series continues Saturday, with first pitch at 6 p.m.

Cal Poly won two matches on Friday in Bakersfield, the first time the Mustangs have won two in a row in the program’s brief history.

Taylor Nelson and Savannah Niemen clinched the victory over San Jose State at No. 2 with a 21-15, 21-14 win.

Casey Carroll and Bailey Roach, and Dora Beilin and Katherine Brouker also picked up wins for Cal Poly (2-4) against the Spartans.

Anna Gorman and Jacqui Martin teamed up for a win against CSU Bakersfield, as did the Nelson Niemen duo. Also winning were Carroll and Roach, and Beilin and Brouker.

RUNNING Oklahoma State’s Camacho qualifies for finals in 800

Former Templeton High standout Savannah Camacho qualified Friday for the NCAA Division 1 finals in the 800 meters at the Indoor Track and Field in Alabama on Saturday.

The Oklahoma State runner was second in the event in Oregon two years ago, and qualifies as an automatic All-American.

The event will be televised on ESPN3.
