Buckley resigns as Cal Poly wrestling coach after five seasons

Cal Poly wrestling coach Brendan Buckley resigned after five seasons leading the Mustangs program, according to a release put out by the school Thursday afternoon.

Buckley stepped down in order to accept a position as executive director of Beat the Streets Wrestling, New York City. During his time with the Mustangs, Buckley helped guide eight wrestlers to the NCAA Championships.

He also helped Dominic Kastl and Devon Lotito win Pac-12 titles in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

“I want to thank Don Oberhelman for the opportunity coach the Cal Poly wrestling program and to President Armstrong for the opportunity to work at this remarkable university,” Buckley said in the release. “Both of these men were terrific allies and incredibly supportive.”

Oberhelman said the national search for Buckley’s replacement will begin immediately. The NCAA Championship meet will be held next week at Madison Square Garden in New York, and Oberhelman said he plans to attend with hopes of identifying a potential candidate.

“We wish Brendan the best in his future endeavors,” Oberhelman said. “During his five years at Cal Poly, he has changed the culture of the program for the better and the academic side of the program is as good as anyone else in the country.”
