Cal Poly baseball team loses to Pepperdine 12-3

Pepperdine scored 11 runs in the second inning to beat the Cal Poly baseball team 12-3 in a nonconference game Tuesday afternoon.

The Waves (4-8) used six hits, three hit batters and two walks, sending 15 batters to the plate in the second inning to help snap a six-game losing streak.

Cal Poly (10-3) scored twice in the first when Brett Barbier hit a solo home run and Michael Sanderson had an RBI single.

Seven of Pepperdine’s 11 runs in the second were unearned because of a throwing error at the plate.

Pepperdine added a run in the sixth, and Cal Poly score two more runs in the ninth on a Sanderson groundout and a Pepperdine error.

Easton Lucas earned the win for the Waves, and Jarred Zill was handed the loss for the Mustangs.

Lucas finished with one walk and three strikeouts. Zill allowed eight runs, four earned and three hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Redshirt freshman Spencer Howard pitched four innings of relief for the Mustangs, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Andrew Bernstein and Bobby Ay each pitched scoreless innings.

Cal Poly continues its road trip this weekend with a three-game series at Grand Canyon.
