Cal Poly softball team splits doubleheader at Mustang Classic
The Cal Poly softball team lost 2-1 to Weber State in the early game of a doubleheader at the Mustang Classic on Friday at Bob Janssen Field, then bounced back with a 9-0 win over Toledo in six innings.
Sierra Hyland hit a grand slam in the win, her team-leading third homer of the season. Amanda Sandoval was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run, and Stephanie Heyward was 2 for 4 with a triple, a run and two RBI. Ashley Torino had two hits and scored twice for Cal Poly (14-5).
Lindsey Chalmers (6-2) tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out four.
In the loss to Weber State, Hyland (8-3) allowed nine hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
Heyward was 2 for 3 with an RBI, but the Mustangs managed just five hits as a team.
Cal Poly closes out the tournament with a 2 p.m. game against Weber State on Saturday, weather permitting.
