Golf roundup: Cal Poly men’s team in first place after two blistering rounds at Del Walker Classic

The Cal Poly men’s golf team set a school record for scoring and was in first place after two rounds of play at the Del Walker Classic on Monday in Long Beach.

The Mustangs posted a four-player score of 268 in the afternoon round on the 6,652-yard, par-70 Virginia Country Club course. Cal Poly eclipsed the mark of 269 set in 2006-2007 at the Big West Conference Championships in Mission Viejo.

The Mustangs shot 288 in the morning round, and the 4-under 556 total over 36 holes has them atop the leaderboard heading into Tuesday’s final round. Long Beach State is two stokes back. Wichita State is third at 12-over 572.

Four Cal Poly golfers are in the top 10 individually: Cole Nygren was tied for third at 3-under 137, and Jordan Wright, Justin De Los Santos and Jesse Yap are all tied for eighth place at even-par 140.

Jimmy Castles is tied for 17th place at 3-over 143.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Cal Poly at the Bruin Wave Invitational

The Mustangs are in 11th place after two rounds of play at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.

UCLA leads the tournament with a four-player total of 576, 10 strokes ahead of Arizona State. Cal Poly is at 618.

Jamie Harada is in 35th place at 153, and Lucy Robson and Desiree Gillaspy are tied for 49th at 155.

UCLA’s Lilia Vu is the individual leader at 3-under 141.
