Cal Poly softball team wins two at Stockton tournament

The Cal Poly softball team won two games Friday as they opened play at the Libby Matson Tournament in Stockton.

The Mustangs (8-4) topped Purdue 3-2 and Cal State Bakersfield 3-1.

Sierra Hyland struck out 11 in the win over Purdue (6-4) as she improved to 5-2. Hyland allowed five hits and three walks, while giving up two runs — one earned — in a complete-game victory. Amanda Sandoval went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run, and Courtney Tyler was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Chelsea Convissar was 1 for 2 with two runs.

In the win over Cal State Bakersfield (3-3), Lindsey Chalmers (3-2) allowed one run on six hits while striking out three. Stephanie Heyward was 3 for 4 with a run, and Tyler was 1 for 2 with two RBI and a run.

The Mustangs play both teams again Saturday as tournament play continues.
